A look into the mirror
A look into pale eyes
Furrows in the bark, a thousand scars
Dark veins traverse my skin
Like deep roots below the surface

Red lips are thin, once I was well
But now skin is rough and pale

There were times when others lived inside
Ripping and bleeding it white
There were times when something grew in my heart
A stabbing pain
Something grew inside

Once faced up to them who lived inside
Invigorated by daily defense
Standing strong in confidence
Against the forces of nature
With deep-seated roots that nothing could pull out
Cradled by storms seeding others beside

Now, almost a century passed by
The log inclines, standing stooped, goes limp
Furrows in the bark, a thousand scars
Deep roots below the surface
But stands so proud with inner force
